Background

The Learning Health Community’s Learning Health System (LHS) Technology Forum initiative will organize a series of forums bringing together technology leaders, entrepreneurs, and other stakeholders, working together to discuss and advance LHSs.

The LHS vision initially created by the National Academy of Medicine (NAM/IOM) is being implemented now through US HHS agencies like AHRQ and NIH and by some leading health systems and hospitals. LHSs are expected to transform healthcare in the United States as well as globally. The Learning Health Community, a multi-stakeholder nonprofit organization working to advance LHSs worldwide anchored in a set of shared consensus Core Values, has been bringing together leaders and do-ers for over eight years; it has empowered diverse people and organizations to collaboratively transform healthcare and health.

To help accelerate realization of the LHS vision, the Learning Health Community is launching a new initiative – the LHS Technology Forum. Since founded in 2012 as a result of the first National LHS Summit, the Learning Health Community has coalesced an ever-expanding global community including researchers and practitioners -- as well as all other stakeholders -- in the emerging field of LHSs. The new series of LHS forums will be focused on bringing together academic LHS researchers and industry innovators to discuss new LHS technologies, products and service models, and LHS application in healthcare transformation. The Forum is based in Silicon Valley, open and free to everyone in the world.

Forums

Sixth Forum, December 2022

  • Topic: Synthetic Patient Data - A Game Changer for LHS?

  • Description: While the vision of Learning Health Systems (LHS) from the National Academy of Medicine is inspiring, challenges remain in progressing towards implementing and running LHS in clinical care and public health. One major hurdle is the lack of access to patient data by the larger technology community. Can synthetic patient data be a game changer for LHS? This LHS Tech Forum will cover a brand-new topic on the impact of synthetic patient data in the emerging field of LHS. We will hear the inside story behind the development of the leading synthetic patient data technology: the Synthea patient generator from MITRE development team. It will be followed by presentation and discussion of a recent study of using Synthea patient data for simulating a basic LHS unit (as published in Nature). You are welcome to ask questions and discuss synthetic patients and LHS.

Fifth Forum, January 2022

  • Topic: How Clinical Research Platforms Can Empower Learning Health Systems

  • Description: In this Fifth LHS Tech Forum, Dr. Brad Hirsch from Verily (Google/Alphabet) will speak about Verily’s clinical trials platform, known as Baseline. He will share his vision for how this platform can empower LHSs by improving clinical trial execution, data aggregation and analysis, and the capture and use of real-world health data. Dr. Ken Mahaffey from Stanford University will present his extensive experience collaborating with Verily on the Baseline Health Study in the field of cardiovascular medicine. Following these presentations, we will engage the audience in a discussion with the speakers on how clinical trials platforms can fulfill their potential and overcome challenges in enabling the LHS.
